VTACDL has established this Scholarship Fund for defense attorneys to attend continuing legal education programs to enhance their skills.
Matt Harnett was an active and long-time member of VTACDL who sadly passed away on November 19, 2012. He was 54 years old. He was a partner in the law firm of Lorentz, Lorentz and Harnett in Rutland. Matt was a zealous advocate committed to his clients, and one of the best trial lawyers in Vermont. Matt was also committed to the education and development of new attorneys. He relished the opportunity to work with new attorneys at the Green Mountain Criminal Defense Institute's Mini-Trial School, and was always willing to take calls, brainstorm, and troubleshoot cases with other attorneys. Because of this and more, VTACDL has established the Scholarship Fund in Matt's memory. We hope you will consider making a contribution to this important endeavor.

THE MATT HARNETT SCHOLARSHIP (“MHSF”) APPLICATION
for the National Criminal Defense College (“NCDC”) trial advocacy program:
This scholarship was founded in memory of Matt Harnett, our cherished colleague and friend, to give criminal defense attorneys the opportunity to attend the NCDC program that was so dear to his heart. It is a terrific program that is extremely valuable for inexperienced AND experienced trial attorneys.
To be eligible for this scholarship you must be a public defender who is a member of the Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (“VTACDL”), or a private criminal defense attorney who is a member of VTACDL. For those attorneys who wish to apply, (but are not members), we will accept a membership application to join VTACDL simultaneously with your scholarship application.
The NCDC is a two-week program. The MHSF pays for full tuition and hotel, up to $4000.00. There is also a $300.00 stipend to be used for airfare and/or car rental.
To apply, please send an email to vtacdl@gmail.com and include the following:
• your resume (which should include number of trials, both bench and jury)
• a reference letter from your supervisor, (if you have one), or, if you do not have a supervisor, someone you consider a mentor)
• a brief statement as to why you think you deserve the scholarship
