PRESIDENT'S AWARD: 

The Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers President’s Award is given annually to a criminal defense attorney who best exemplifies the goals and values of the Association and the legal profession in Vermont.  The recipient of the award will have demonstrated commitment to:

 

The notion that the proper administration of criminal justice occurs when all persons accused of a crime receive fair, rational, and humane treatment within the criminal justice system;

The protection of individual rights through zealous representation of persons accused of a crime;

Fostering the integrity, independence, and expertise of the criminal defense bar;

To the protection and defense of the Vermont Constitution, the United States Constitution, and the adversarial system of justice;

The enhancement of the capacity of the criminal defense bar to safeguard fundamental constitutional rights through the promotion of study and research in the field of criminal defense law and the related arts;

The dissemination and advancement by lecture, seminars, and publication knowledge of the law relating to criminal defense practice, which is necessary to the protection of fundamental constitutional rights;

Service as a leader in identifying and reforming flaws and inequities in the criminal justice system, redressing systemic racism, and ensuring members of the criminal defense bar are fully equipped to serve all accused persons at the highest level.

 

The President and the Board will also consider the recipient’s commitment to the Association and its membership, service as a mentor to newer lawyers, service to the recipient’s community, commitment to serving indigent defendants, generosity of spirit, personal sacrifice, and creativity in criminal defense.
